Mental fitness for swimmers





TASK 1: Living modelling

1. Set yourself a goal. What skill do you want to learn? It could be the trajectory of a freestyle hand stroke or a good take-off jump.

2. Find and choose a model for yourself. You can choose a technique video where the model works as an example.

3. Think to yourself, «I know that skill. Reinforce this positive belief with inner speech.

4. Watch the video several times. Observe carefully all the details:

movements
gestures
postures
soundscape

5. Watch the video again several times so that you imagine yourself in the model’s place. Think about all the details.

6. Put yourself in the model’s shoes. If you are not satisfied, start again from step 3 and practice until you are satisfied.

7. Write down your observations and feelings.

TASK 2: Tension and overcoming fears

List the things that are exciting/annoying/scary. Make cloud shaped pictures of them.
List meaningful/exciting things. Make them into suns.
Think about what kind of activity the clouds and suns trigger in you.

Then read the story below and think about what it means for you.

TASK 3: Two dogs

Once upon a time, there was a wise tribal chieftain whose name was «Two Dogs». He told his tribe: «Inside me live two dogs, fighting each other. One of the dogs sees goodness, beauty, resources, talents, strength and success in people. The other dog sees evil, ugliness, imperfections, weaknesses, failures and shortcomings in people.» He ended his story there and the tribe was one of the question marks. Finally, someone asked which dog would win. To this the tribal chief replied: «Of course, the one I fed.»
