Body and mind belong together. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or a racer, strengthening your mind is good for you.

Learning and developing your swimming skills requires your mind to be involved in your training. Mental fitness is about processing and managing thought and emotional patterns. It complements physical training and helps you to perform in competitive situations.

Becoming a good swimmer takes perseverance and time, but you can influence your own attitude and thinking immediately.

Remember positive self-talk

You don’t learn new things or perform well by being tense and over-stretched. Uncertainty, stress and tension are all felt in our bodies.

Not all stress is harmful. Good stress helps us keep going and recharges us for race performance. If there is no charge, the performance will not be the best it can be. In harmful stress, the body is on constant alert. This can be triggered by a prolonged period of stress or another external event. However, it is our own thoughts that cause us to feel stressed.
