For many swimmers, competing has been an integral part of their hobby since childhood. Others only start as adults.

Swimmers typically start competing at an early age. For a child, competing is and should be a game. The goals may be to achieve a good personal performance, to build team spirit and to experience success. Parental encouragement and positive feedback are important. Competing is practised in training sessions, then in the club’s own competitions and age group competitions.

Swimming competitions include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, medley and relay. The two official pool dimensions are a short course of 25 metres and a long course of 50 metres. Competitive swimmers usually concentrate on one style and swim it for a short or long distance.

Masters swimmers over 25 years of age compete in different age groups and in relays. There are three masters championships in Finland every year.
