«Some people also experience feelings of nervousness if they drink a lot of coffee. In theory, coffee can also impair iron absorption,» says Laatikainen.

The exact cause of coffee’s health effects is not known. Laatikainen thinks the benefits are due to the fact that coffee contains three healthy substances: potassium, magnesium and chlorogenic acid.

«Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenolic substance. They are the same substances that make berries super-healthy,» says Laatikainen.

«The biggest source of polyphenols for the average Finn is coffee.»
