Nutritionist: ‘Drinking coffee clearly does more good than harm’ – see what

Many people also remember the widespread coverage of the cholesterol-raising effects of coffee in the news at the time. The majority of today’s coffee drinkers are not concerned about cholesterol: filter coffee does not raise cholesterol or affect blood pressure.

«If you’re not used to drinking coffee, it can raise your blood pressure for an hour or two. The effect disappears when you drink a lot of coffee,» says Reijo Laatikainen.

Good or bad?

Still, the worry sits in the stubbornness. A month ago, a Californian judge ordered coffee companies to warn people about coffee’s cancer risks. The decision was based on the fact that coffee contains acrylamide, which is formed in food during high temperatures and roasting. It can increase the risk of cancer.

Reijo Laatikainen finds the decision strange. He says coffee has many more good health benefits than bad.

«It was the judge and not the health authority who made that decision,» says Laatikainen.
