Capsaicin paralyses surface pain by destroying pain nerve endings under the skin. The effect lasts for 2 to 3 months at a time.

A local anaesthetic around the wrist joints or around the nerve root sometimes calms some of the overall pain. Anaesthesia can be given every six months or so as part of other pain management.
Electrostimulation can help with long-lasting and localised pain in the limb if the pain is very severe and cannot be adequately controlled by other means. The stimulator is fitted over the spinal cord.
