«Great joy is not always loud» – these are 10 things I learned in hospital pediatric wards

3. Joy is not easily extinguished

It can be sparked in the little things. The first chocolate pudding your child can swallow after surgery. Or the moment when your child can concentrate for a moment while you read him Tatu and Patu.

Joy doesn’t have to be loud. It can be modest on the outside and yet enormous at the same time.

4. Everyday life is the most precious

You only realise this when you temporarily take everyday life away. That’s when you miss with all your heart the busy mornings when you used to dress your child in kurtas in the hallway.

5. Another person with the same experience understands best

When mum or dad is scared and worried, friends and professionals around them are important. But the joy and sorrow shared with peer support is unique because not everything can be explained in words.

Many things don’t even need words to share.
