The anaerobic threshold is the heart rate above which lactic acid begins to enter the muscles so quickly that you are no longer able to remove it as quickly and exhaustion is sooner or later inevitable. The anaerobic threshold is about 85-90% of the maximum heart rate.

Determination of heart rate limits

So how do you know your heart rate limits? You can determine your heart rate thresholds by so-called threshold tests, which can be done for example by running on a treadmill or pedalling a bicycle. The intensity of the test is increased up to the point of exhaustion, and blood samples are taken during the test to determine the blood lactate level. Based on power and/or pace, lactic acid levels and heart rate data, heart rate limits and threshold paces and efforts for exercise are determined. If a test is not possible, the heart rate limits can be determined by calculation.
