The Top Locations to Visit in December

5.Fiji

Starting December 1, Fiji reopens its borders to vaccinated international travelers after shutting them early last year due to the pandemic. Only a 10-hour direct flight from the west coast (or about 15 from NYC) the country has more than 300 pristine islands to explore. One of them, Malolo Island, which is the largest of the Mamanuca Islands archipelago, is home to the Six Senses Fiji. With just 24 spacious villas that each measure at least 1,200 square feet and are equipped with private pools and outdoor showers, plus several palatial two- to five-bedroom residences, this is home-away-from-home luxury at its finest. And in keeping with the Six Senses brand ethos, sustainability efforts figure largely at this property—the resort is home to 39 Fijian Crested iguanas, an endangered native species with less than 5,000 left in the world.

6.New Orleans, Louisiana

December in New Orleans ticks off many boxes. With high temperatures in the 60s, you’ll avoid the stifling heat and humidity of the summer months. And with Mardi Gras still a few months away, you’ll enjoy the city without having to contend with throngs of unruly partygoers. And with Christmas just around the corner, there will still be plenty of festive spirit all around. As for where to stay, book one of the whimsically appointed rooms at Maison de la Luz, the jewel box of a property from the team behind the Ace hotels that opened two years ago in the Warehouse District. It’ll be the prettiest place to lay your head after a day full of beignets and gumbo.
