5. Consider that the pain may be neurogenic. The nerves of the spinal cord can be compressed, especially with age. Symptoms may include neck pain radiating to the arm or a tingling or burning sensation in the affected area. The pain may vary from day to day. However, over-the-counter pain medications such as non-prescription anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and exercise can often be used to relieve this condition.
Nerve compression may also occur in the arm. If it occurs in the wrist, it is called carpal tunnel syndrome; if it occurs in the elbow, it is called ulnar tunnel syndrome. Symptoms usually include pain and a tingling sensation in the affected arm or hand.

6. Keep in mind that repetitive strain injuries (LER) may occur. Repetitive strain injuries can occur when performing tasks that involve the use of the arm or hand on a consistent basis, such as in manufacturing processes, manual labor, heavy mechanical lifting, and computer work. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a type of nerve injury that occurs as a result of activities that involve repetitive motion (such as typing). Your employer can improve and adjust your work area to prevent your condition from worsening. For example, it can provide you with an adjustable chair and can also modify the desk board so you don’t have to elevate your arm.
